Anger Management

By: Samantha De Bono

SDB Counselling Service

Anger is a healthy, normal emotion, but it’s also a complex one. It can be a motivating force for change and like all emotions; anger involves physiological and chemical changes in the body. Heart rates and adrenaline levels are affected as the body experiences anger. For some people these surges can become addictive and destructive and there is a fine line between letting someone know you are angry and being heard and venting it until it is out of control.

It’s true that if anger cannot be expressed it can lead to physical problems, depression and anxiety.  However, it is ‘how’ anger is expressed that makes all the difference.

How counselling can help:

•    Exploring the causes of anger and understanding them
•    Looking at unhealthy beliefs attached to anger
•    Reassessing some of the unhelpful beliefs about anger in the family
•    Understanding how anger is affecting the people closest to you
•    Looking at other ways to deal with and express anger

My aim as a counsellor is to help you to reduce the feelings that anger creates, so that you can manage your anger  and turn it into a positive experience.  Once you know how to recognise and express anger in a constructive way, it can help you to achieve goals, solve problems and handle relationships in a way that is beneficial to you rather than detrimental, managing anger allows you the freedom to be heard without causing a tidal wave of destruction.
